WebbSTP is running on Layer 2 ports, so Layer 2 links are required. If Layer 2 links do not exist between ASBRs, PWs or Layer 3 ports must be added. STP blocks a link on the inter-AS ring network to prevent broadcast and unknown unicast packets from being forwarded in a loop and the remote PE from receiving duplicate traffic. In ERPS there is a central node called RPL Owner Node which blocks one of the ports to ensure that there is no loop formed for the Ethernet traffic. The link blocked by the RPL owner node is called the Ring Protection Link or RPL. The node at the other end of the RPL is known as RPL Neighbor Node. It uses R-APS control messages to coordinate the activities of switching on/off the RPL link.
